Limited edition of 700 copies published in 2014 by Zen Foto Gallery, Japan. This is a reprint of the 1973 edition of Shikishima by Tamiko Nishimura, featuring a series of photos taken during the photographer's travels around Japan from 1969 to 1972. The reprint comes in a slipcase and is accompanied by a supplement of unpublished photographs, with English translations of the original text and a newly written piece by Nishimura.

The book Shikishima showcases a series of photographs taken during Nishimura’s journeys across the Tohoku, Hokuriku, Kanto, Kansai, and Chugoku regions of Japan from 1969 to 1972. To accompany the exhibition Shikishima at Zen Foto Gallery from February 5 to March 1 this year, Zen published a reprint of the 1973 edition, including a supplement of unpublished photographs.

“The weather changed often, with strong winds, sunshine, clouds, and rain. I was strongly attracted by the way the light shined, by the smell of flowers, and just by the atmosphere of the place, rather than what I actually saw. Even if I walked through the same place every day, each walk would be different, depending on who I met or how the light shined. It is not particularly about visiting somewhere new. Still, while watching foreign ships in Kobe Port, I dreamed of one day sailing on one to a country I’ve never been to before.”
— Tamiko Nishimura
